The whole killer kids thing has been done countless times before, but never with the unrelenting ugliness and realism of James Watkins's Eden Lake.

Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender's romantic getaway quickly descends into the kind of nightmare scenario everyone has contemplated during their most paranoid hours, thanks to a band of sadistic kids.

The Brit horror enters its final act when Reilly's Jenny reaches the apparent safety of a stranger's house, her partner long since killed by the knife-packing kids, some of whom also died during the horrible ordeal, slain either in self-defence by the leads, or by the group's twisted leader Brett.

In a grim twist, Jenny's safehouse turns out to be Brett's family home, and the young villain has only gone and convinced the dead kids' parents that she killed them all in cold blood.

The surviving lead's screams can be heard as she is seemingly subjected to some form of horrible off-screen vigilantism. If this sounds like a needlessly bleak ending, that's only because it is. It certainly is shocking, though.
