3. Friday The 13th: Undead Jason's Watery Cameo

Friday the 13th
Paramount

Mrs. Voorhees is dead, decapitated with machete during the final showdown, so surely that's the end of sole survivor Alice's ordeal and there's nothing but sunshine and rainbows in Camp Crystal Lake's future?

Well, not exactly. Friday the 13th still had one good scare left in it. Just as the audience began wondering where they left the car in the cinema parking lot, an undead Jason Voorhees leaps out of the water and attacks the protagonist.

At this point in cinema history, Jason was simply a passing reference and part of the backstory, not an iconic, hockey-masked killer, so his arrival in the final scene was straight out of left field.

There's nothing particularly clever or creative about the way the scene plays out, especially when you consider it was originally supposed to be a dream sequence until somebody at Paramount ordered a lorryload of sequels. But there's no escaping the fact this was a perfectly executed jump-scare.
