6. Pirates Of The Caribbean
A blockbuster movie based on a theme park ride from an amusement park created by a movie maestro; the Pirates of the Caribbean films never seemed the most original of ideas. And yet the first film proved to be a fresh, fun blockbuster; a sea-faring Indiana Jones-style adventure that surprised everyone. The main joke that won everyone over to the first instalment was how Jack Sparrow was a terrible pirate, undeserving of the legend. It gave Johnny Depps camp performance an added layer and helped improve all those who acted with him. However, the moment Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney saw the takings from his first adventure, the series took a sharp turn. It has now reached the point where Jacks abilities match and exceed the reputation; he may be still bumbling, but victory is not a surprise. The second and third films are notable for the groundbreaking CGI of the tentacled Davy Jones, but that aside the series was attempting at an epic scale that it couldnt maintain. A supposed stripped away take last year, On Stranger Tides, didn't do much better, with loud action sequences with no identity. In a similar way to Ice Age, the series is so far from what it originally started off as - with the only link being Capn Jack himself - that having the planned fifth instalment seems pointless. A novel idea that became a cash-in.
