10 Movie Franchises That Have Over-Stayed Their Welcome

5. Scary Movie

Charlie Sheen and Lidsay Lohan Remember how I said only two points ago how pop culture references were getting tired? Well no one€™s told these guys. The original Scary Movie, a loose parody of Scream (a film that was already a pastiche) was a passable if pushing its gross-out humour too far. While everything went downhill with the three sequels, the real crime the series committed was opening the floodgates for the seemingly endless spate of €˜parody€™ movies we€™ve been subjected to. Starting of as sweeping riffs on their title genres, the likes of Disaster, Epic and Date Movie quickly moved into simply referencing recent blockbusters; €˜You€™ve seen Iron Man, right? Here€™s someone who looks a bit like him. Haha!€™ It€™s more painful than with Ice Age because here it dominates the entire movie. Mentioning a different movie in a movie is as funny as the €˜Who€™s There?€™ part of a Knock Knock joke; if there€™s no punch line, there€™s no joke. The decreasing awareness of these films, with smaller box office and fewer trailers, made it look like we were at the end of this era However, with Scary Movie 5 now set for a 2013 release, the biggest entry in the genre could restore its popularity. Even if it doesn't, the films are so cheap to produce and require minimal thought behind them that they don€™t need a massive gross to make a profit; the reason it continues is the same reason it should be cancelled.
