Having been only released in 2016, the proposed remake of the anime success is incredibly fast work.

The Amazing Spider-Man series director Marc Webb is already attached to direct this one, and screenwriter Eric Heisserer of Arrival fame has stated that the movie will be "Americanized".

There is hope for this one, as the original studio behind the anime is working with Hollywood closely, and rightholders Toho studios specifically wanted to see a Western take on the story. This will inevitably open the doors for whitewashing controversy to take over the discussion surrounding the film and potentially put off much of its intended audience, but as long as this message from the original creators is made clear, it may make it out alive.

The project has also had the backing of J.J. Abrams and his studio Bad Robot Productions for several years, as well as already having the backing of Paramount, so maybe this remake will turn out to be a true collaboration of great minds. Production seems to be going ahead pretty swiftly, so expect to see casting announcements in the near future.
