Movies have often been considered an escape for people, a break from reality to sit back and relax to; but what about those movies that we can't escape from ourselves? Some films have a way of burrowing into your mind and permanently searing questions or considerations into your sub-conscious.

Whether through the writing, the subject matter, the acting etc. few mediums have the ability to hold such sway over us as the movies. They have the ability to affect us, to connect with us. You stumble from the cinema as a wave of intense emotion washes over you and you can't help but run what you've just seen over and over in your mind.

Questions about life, love, laughter rattle around your brain as if they're the only pieces of information in there, as if they're the only things that matter anymore.

Visually striking, emotionally draining, sometimes even life-changing these are the 10 Movies That Really Stay With You...

10. Foxcatcher

requiem for a dream
Sony Pictures Classics

The story of a deeply disturbed man with an unhealthy obsession and no limits to what his money can grant him; Foxcatcher's lasting impression comes in the truth behind the tale. Anchored by fantastic performances from Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and, most notably, from Steve Carrell; the film tells the story of eccentric multi-millionaire John Du Pont and his disturbing relationship with Olympic champion brothers Dave and Mark Shultz.

The film descends sharply into almost unbelievable levels of disturbing behaviour and the uneasiness with which we regard Du Pont throughout ripples through every scene. It is a movie about obsession and the danger of it when it's given every opportunity to push it to the limit.

The relationships between the characters is equally as unsettling as anything else with its narrative. Du Pont and Mark Shultz in particular share an abusive and manipulative relationship that serves neither one well in the end. It mirrors the worst elements of toxic relationships ingrained in our minds and it unsettles as much as it fascinates from a distance.

Foxcatcher is a film that will live long in the memory for all those who watch it. It is a tough watch, no doubt, but a worthwhile one and one that will have you googling the real story immediately afterwards.
