P.T. Anderson's oil drilling masterpiece is perhaps best known for a towering, milkshake drinking performance from Daniel Day-Lewis, arguably his best of a stellar career, but it is also a powerful and visceral look at greed and capitalism in Western society.

Daniel Plainview is not a particularly likeable protagonist but he is an exceptionally admirable one; a man who will do anything to get to the top. It is the power-swings, the questionable decisions made on unwavering motives that keep you gripped throughout. It is a vicious chore to watch as Daniel does everything in his power to stay at the very top, only to seemingly stumble and fall when so close. He is driven to madness and stripped of his dignity all in his unmitigating quest for money and power.

We can't help but see our own ambitions and drives; our own flaws in Daniel's view of the world. It is a descent that stays with us as we are forced to rethink our entire outlook on money and power and what it all means. That bowling scene is enough to stay with anyone well after mad old Daniel was finished...
