When a bizarre phenomenon sweeps the globe, parents are turned into homicidal maniacs - intent on killing their own children in a murderous rage. Starring as titular dad Brent, Nicolas Cage takes to the screen to try and kill his two kids in a plethora of gruesome ways, expressing his loss of sanity in varying degrees of Cage-dom.

Favourites from the film include Cage smashing a pool table to pieces with a sledgehammer whilst singing the hokey pokey, and sexually assaulting a beer can with his tongue. With this being the second time director Brian Taylor has collaborated with the big man himself, the first time being on Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, we know exactly what to expect from this clash of ridiculous forces - and so do they.

Citing his inspiration as Jack Torrance from The Shining, he wanted to achieve a level of horror and comedy that Jack Nicholson made all his own in the 80s. To be fair to our favourite over-acter, Cage's take on events clearly includes both genres, just not necessarily in equal measure.

In any case, Cage has been in the rodeo long enough to know exactly what was going to go down with this film, and try as he might to relate it back to career-defining inspiration: there's no getting away from his irrefutable ridiculousness. We need to give him a sledgehammer and some creative control more often.
