10 Summer Horror Movies You Have To See

6. Campfire Tales (1997)

Kelly Brook Piranha
New Line Cinema

Here's one that doesn't take place at a summer camp, but it still plays into the idea of telling stories around the campfire. In fact, this movie is completely about that, playing on the innocence and horror that comes from being a kid and hearing about urban legends that you totally buy into, as silly as they are.

The movie follows a group of characters whose car crashes in the woods, and so to pass the time until the morning, they decide to make a fire and tell scary stories. It then becomes an anthology movie, showing us all the stories they're telling each other, most of which are actual urban legends.

It opens with the classic legend about teenagers making out in the car when they hear on the radio that a man with a hook for a hand on the loose. Other stories include a couple in an RV who encounter a strange creature, a twelve-year-old left home alone, and a man who stops by a farmhouse and meets a mute woman.

Though a lot of the stories are ones audiences will be familiar with, this movie offers some great renditions of them. Throw it on during an eerie summer night, imagining yourself around a warm fire, eating marshmallows, and trying not to think about what lurks in the woods behind you.
