With a respectable 62% rating on the webs go-to site for film reviews, writer/director Ryan Schifrin did what all B-movie filmmakers dream of doing and avoided a Splat on Rotten Tomatoes. A title like Abominable almost begs critics to do their worst in their reviews, though a surprisingly large number of them deemed Schifrin’s film worthy of their time.

The subject of the movie, contrary to the title, is not the abominable snowman but his equally elusive cousin Bigfoot, a creature that has reportedly been sighted over 42,000 times in over 68 countries. Unfortunately for some college kids on a weekend cabin break, Bigfoot’s true home is in the California mountains, and he is just about fed up of having to avoid humans.

Their only hope for survival is woodsman Preston Rogers (Matt McCoy), an ex-mountain climber confined to his cabin after a bad fall left him in a wheelchair. His isolation has led to Rogers coming to know the mountain woods well, though a skeptical local sheriff refuses to believe his claims that something bad is about to happen up there.

While some were quick to point the finger at some niggling plot holes, others were of the opinion that Abominable excels despite them, never pretending to be anything other than a straight up splatter film that, while admittedly uneven in parts, is entertaining throughout. The tongue-in-cheekness that has become a staple of Syfy original movies is thankfully absent here, with the director confident enough to set his sights higher than simply scoring B-movie points.
