When it debuted in the summer of 1975, Jaws was an instant smash that changed movie making, movie going, and beach trips for all eternity. Legions of fans keep the movie’s sales alive to this day. In fact, Jaws is released on Blu-Ray in the UK on Monday, much to the delight of those millions of fans.
If you’re one of those fans, you probably know more than a couple of the items on this list, but I bet you don’t know them all. So let’s get going with 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Jaws.
1. The Jaws Shark Ate a Mermaid
If you’re a fan of Jaws, you know the name Susan Backlinie. Susan played the unlucky skinny-dipper Chrissie Watkins, who became the first victim of the shark at the beginning of the movie. What you might not know is that Backlinie played a mermaid at the Weeki Wachee Springs attraction in Hernando County, Florida.
Backlinie would put on a tail and perform several shows a day in the clear, spring water.

Well, the Jaws novel was written as a piece of pulp trash, and that’s exactly what is it – but it’s highly readable trash. Hence it sold millions of copies.
this film is the reason why I’m scared of sharks, and thats the mark of a truly amazing film!
Um sorry dude but just because you’re wife didn’t finish the Jaws book doesn’t mean that you have evidence to back up your statement that the book sucks. It is yet again just another opinion. You are a lazy writer to even include this last statement instead of listing another actual fact about the film. Maybe you need to rename this article nine facts you didn’t know and one opinion that you didn’t care about the movie jaws.
You kinda’ missed the point on that one. “The Book Sucks” was written tongue-in-cheek. It’s pretty obvious that my wife’s opinion isn’t “hard” evidence, and I had no intention of anyone believing I thought so.
The REAL points of #10 are that the movie is better than the book – much better – and that the ending of the book was changed to a more dramatic climax in the movie, with Peter Benchley getting removed from the set over his objections.
I do wish authors of these “10 Things You Didn’t Know About Jaws” lists would please make their list adhere to the perimeters that they themselves have defined within the title of their article……
