10 Things You Learn Rewatching Alien

9. ...But It Also Highlights Technical Limitations

Alien Nostromo

There is one slight drawback of this new restoration, though: it unmistakably draws greater attention to the limitations of the production at the time. The miniature shots of the Nostromo, though detailed, look more artificial under the scrutiny of a remaster.

Observing the Nostromo travelling through space, judder is more noticeable and it's just more obvious we're looking at an optical effect.

The articulation of the miniatures can't quite compare to, say, 2001: A Space Odyssey, which even at 4K resolution looks staggeringly lifelike.

These small gripes are undeniable nitpicks, though it's worth bearing in mind that as superior an experience as the new remaster is, it does also reveal the seams of the effects which were otherwise hidden in previous, lower-fidelity releases.

But most will likely find the more obvious models and miniatures charming in the very least, and let's face it, is most CGI likely to look this convincing 40 years on?
