10 Unmade Joss Whedon Films That Sound Awesome

10. Afterlife

Dollhouse is really the only Joss Whedon property that doesn't have a dedicated cult following. Or at least, not one that could match up to the fervour of your average Browncoat. The show (which made it to two seasons in all) had its high-concept premise loosely based on a spec script Whedon wrote in 1994, which he sold for $1.5 million dollars. Despite that high cost, the show was never made. In fact, the concept of Dollhouse (ie brainwashed assassins) actually works a lot better in the screenplay for Afterlife. In that script, it's a workhaolic government scientist who gets his brain transplanted into a younger model after he dies, at which point he begins working for a secret government team who go on the sort of action-packed missions secret government teams in films do. This scientist, too, resolves to escape from this new job (which doesn't permit him leave the base and see his not-so-widowed wife), only to discover they put him in the body of a serial killer. So he can't! Afterlife avoids a lot of the creepier, pervy themes Whedon wanted €“ and unsuccessfully failed €“ to explore in Dollhouse, and sounds like a better fit for overall for the concept.
