10 Utterly Devastating Film Endings That Totally Came Out Of Nowhere

3. Knowing - The Apocalypse And Aliens

Knowing Ending
Summit Entertainment

Knowing's story isn€™'t a bad one -€“ centring around a mulleted Nic Cage being able to track disasters using mathematics, and what follows is something akin to Final Destination but on an epic scale. Also, the whole thing was lent an air of mystery by the mysterious figures who appear to be watching Nic and his son at their needlessly creepy house.

But come the ending, it goes predictably balls-up bananas. We thought all along that Cage might be able to do something to prevent these disasters, but then the movie pulls a rug-pull of epic proportions by dropping an apocalyptic surprise on us by saying everything€™s going to end very soon as the Earth gets slapped by the sun.

Along with this, it turns out the creepy blokes monitoring the Cage household were aliens intent on nicking his son and the only other child in the plot to start human life again on a trippily weird planet. You just weren€™t expecting it, so when the tone does shift jarringly from mystery to full-on carnage you€™'re left more bemused than anything else.
