Comic books are weird, man. That's kind of our stock in trade, in case you hadn't noticed. And yet, somehow, the spandex-clad men and women who principally populate them have ended up becoming the most popular and profitable Hollywood stars of the moment, with Marvel and DC alike dominating the box office with big screen adaptations of their superhero characters. For decades they've been dismissed as kid's stuff, or hopelessly geeky, or just a bit trashy and not very good; and yet, we live in an age where the average guy on the street is super stoked to see Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Who even knew what those words meant, like, five years ago?

It's a surprising but welcome change, and part of the transformation from nerd curio to serious blockbuster business has been in canny studios making the stories more palatable to a mainstream audiences. By shaving off the stranger aspects of their superheroes - and, considering a vast majority of contemporary heroes were created or solidified in the drug-fuelled haze of the sixties, there's a fair amount of strangeness to go around - and making the comics a little more like your average big budget action flick, superheroes have ended up becoming the go-to protagonists for the latest piece of popcorn fodder.
