12. Riley's Gender Identity Is Deeper Than You Think - Inside Out

The Theory: Many posts have been made online questioning why protagonist Riley has emotions that are both male and female while her mother's emotions are strictly female and her father's are completely male. The answer has varied among fans but the most interesting to consider is she carries emotions of both genders and her identity is not yet woven. Why It's Awesome: It would be an extremely smart move by Pixar to add even more depth to a movie that's already overflowing with it. How Likely Is It?: 3/10. Director Pete Docter has already debunked the theory, claiming, €œI would love to have some deep philosophical answer for you, but the answer is really comedy€. That said, Docter co-wrote the screenplay with two other people, so it's possible that they managed to sneak it by him, even if Disney's higher-ups would probably prefer that Pixar didn't get involved in social activism.
