J.R.R. Tolkien was the genius author behind the epic tales of Middle-Earth including the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit. Though these four books were adapted into six movies, cementing itself as one of the most popular franchises of all time, Tolkien's universe was so much wider than this.

It was only a matter of time before the legendary writer's story was told on the big screen, and in Nicholas Hoult, the studio found the perfect fit to portray the vulnerable young man. However, mixed reviews from critics and a Tomatometer score of just 51% seemingly put the masses off seeing the movie.

Throughout it's entire theatrical run, against a reported budget of around 20 million dollars, Tolkien took in just less than eight million dollars. That's less than the down right awful Playmobil Movie! Though Dome Karukoski's biopic may not have been as good as it could have, this is certainly a record that it did not deserve.
