The Heroes

In the first TRON, the titular hero, Tron and fellow programme CLU are computerised security measures designed by hero Kevin Flynn and his partner Alan Bradley to help them break into ENCOM's mainframe to uncover evidence that his work was ripped off by villain Ed Dillinger.

As Flynn finds himself trapped in the game, he and Tron end up being forced to compete in games used to control/dispose of programmes that resist the rule of Dillinger's programme, the MCP. Clu And Tron are very much extensions of the human heroes, working on their behalf.

But Then...

In the belated sequel, Clu and Tron were appointed co-creators of Flynn's new "perfect" computr system, but on the discovery of new miracle programmes calld ISOs, Clu considered them aberations and turned on Flynn and destroyed them.

It later turns out that he reprogrammed Tron to do his bidding too, reformatting him to become the villainous henchman Rinzler. He remembers his past in the end, but there's no redemption for Clu.
