13 Disappointing Recent Films That Should've Been Great

What Was Expected

A tense, thought-provoking horror film with one of the best premises to a film in... well, in recent years at all.

What We Actually Got

Just a boring home invasion thriller. The idea of The Purge is brilliant, but since the entire film is spent in a house with weak characters killing each other in the dark, social commentary goes out of the window. In the end, it's just another film with masked intruders attacking a house and nearly everything in this film has been seen before in better films.

The world wanted a thought-provoking and politically topical horror film, not another home invasion thriller. Considering the interesting plot and decent cast, it's disappointing that this turned out to be nothing more than a 2-star horror film with a cowardly refusal to do anything different.

Thankfully though, this franchise has since redeemed itself as the sequels have been improvements, so at least there was some redemption later on. That isn't the case with many similarly disappointing films.
