What We Knew

Silver Surfer is arguably the strangest of the recently cancelled movies, because only very recently, there was talk of Adam McKay writing a project for the near future. And back in February 2018, THR reported that Fox were "going 100 miles per hour" to get the movie off the ground - at which point they had comic writer Brian K. Vaughn involved with the script.

Whether those two projects are one and the same remains to be seen, since there is some thinking that the McKay project might be set for the MCU. That seems strangely advanced, considering the slow-down in Fox projects around the deal, but it's not out of the realms of possibility.

Other than Vaughn's involvement, there was very little of substance announced.

Why It Was Cancelled & The Future

The film has been cancelled as part of Fox and Disney's deal, according to Twitter source and claimed industry insider DanielRPK. It makes sense given Disney's presumed reluctance to sanction movies they had no say in at the planning stages, but it's a shame.

As for the future? Well, McKay told MTV that he had had conversations that might still lead to something, if not THIS version of the movie:

There actually has been some discussion about Silver Surfer. My agent certainly woke up. They were excited. We're in the middle of, you know, backing Vice right now, but, who knows, maybe in a couple months it could pop up. I really am excited about that idea. So, we'll see what happens.
