13 Unexpected Actors Who Might Win Oscars In 2020
10. Zac Efron (Best Actor - Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil & Vile)
The Role: Serial killer Ted Bundy, who during the 1970s killed more than 30 young women before being apprehended.
Zac Efron is a likeable actor but not exactly someone who screams Oscar-calibre, though that's largely due to the fairly unambitious bevy of roles he's gravitated towards over the years (usually ones which accentuate his gorgeous bod).
But the Academy sure does love an against-type performance, and though Efron playing Bundy might seem like a bout of stunt casting at first, when you consider how handsome and charming the real Bundy was, it makes so much sense.
Though the film as a whole received mixed-positive reviews out of Sundance, the acclaim for Efron's work has been unanimously positive, and if Bohemian Rhapsody proved anything recently, it's that an Oscar-winning performance need not reside within a well-reviewed movie.
With Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil & Vile set to drop on Netflix later in the year, Academy voters won't have much of an excuse to miss Efron's work, and though the Best Actor field is one of the Oscars' most fiercely contested, the sheer surprise of Efron pivoting his career in this direction could sufficiently dazzle voters.
