Sometimes it's hard not to look at an upcoming movie and simply wonder, "What the hell were they smoking?" Some movies are greenlit, shot and released seemingly in spite of themselves and a studio's desire to actually make money, as it's clear to the audience that it probably won't happen (or if it does, it'll be in spite of horrendous reviews).

These movies represent the most blatantly doomed projects currently in development, from mega-budget sci-fi blockbusters with little chance of success to crappy horror reboots that have been continually delayed for years and years.

Yes, it's entirely possible one or two of these movies could defy conventional wisdom and end up both critically and commercially successful (after all, look at World War Z), but the smart money is on them being laughable embarrassments above all else.

Here are 13 upcoming movies that are already doomed (and why)...

13. Ghost In The Shell

Valerian Dane DeHaan Cara Delevingne
Paramount

Release Date: March 31, 2017

Why It's Doomed: For starters, it's a PG-13 live-action adaptation of a beloved R-rated anime, which already has a lot of fans sharpening their knives.

Sure, Scarlett Johansson is a solid choice for The Major (if you ignore all that whitewashing controversy) and some of the visuals look pretty swish, but it's difficult to imagine such a heady and frankly weird film translating well to a more casual western crowd.

With its clearly enormous production budget and a rather lackluster marketing campaign so far, this one seems destined to bomb with casual audiences, while the hardcore crowd will likely be turned off by the concessions made to broaden its appeal.
