6. Jaws: The Revenge (1987)

Even 30 years ago, movie studios knew better than to actually include the number four in a franchise's fourth entry (some of them, anyway), yet that didn't stop Jaws: The Revenge tanking critically and commercially.

Incredibly managing to out-camp the ludicrous third movie, Jaws 3-D, The Revenge follows widow Ellen Brody (Lorraine Gary) as she comes to believe that a great white shark is targeting her family out of, you got it, revenge.

This is a textbook case of a movie franchise realising it's spun wildly out of control and just throwing everything at the screen to see what sticks. In addition to the wacky "shark with a vendetta" premise, we see a lot more of the shark here and the effects are uniformly terrible, there's a legendarily awful continuity error (star Michael Caine's shirt goes from wet to dry between shots), and the shark even roars at the end.

As an argument for film as pure entertainment, it just might have you crying with laughter, and its game, po-faced commitment to such an outlandish premise so far removed from Spielberg's classic original should be (modestly) lauded.

Nothing in the movie is as awesome, however, as Caine's legendary comment about the film: "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific!"
