The original cut of Highlander II was widely lambasted as an horrendous follow-up to the 1986 fantasy cult classic, and Roger Ebert famously called it both "hilariously incomprehensible" and "almost awesome in its badness". He's not wrong.

While any version of Highlander II has only the most scarce grasp on narrative logic and franchise continuity, the 2004 Special Edition - which includes a ton of extra footage, a more coherent plot and nifty new effects - is a substantially better film, and well worth checking out for anyone who previously dismissed the original cut.

Even the theatrical release isn't without its entertainment value, though: Michael Ironside gives an hilariously over-the-top performance, it's fun seeing Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert together again, and the visuals are legitimately much stronger than the material really deserves.

Many will hate it for effectively hobbling the Highlander series so badly that it's never been able to recover, but it is a fun enough "switch your brain off" movie, especially in its newest incarnation.
