15 Most Groundbreaking Movies Of The Decade (So Far)

From 12 year shoots to taking 3D in new and interesting directions.

Given that cinema is well over one hundred years old and over that period of time hundreds of thousands of movies have been produced, it's tempting to believe that all that remains are rehashes of old ideas in modern contexts and very little in the way of movies which break new ground. It's certainly true that the vast majority of movies released in recent years hardly offer audiences anything new by way of cinematic experiences, and that Hollywood in particular prefers to play it safe, churning out endless franchise sequels, remakes and reboots instead of investing their time and money in bold new features. But as predictable as mainstream cinema may have become, the industry on the whole has far more to offer than tentpole blockbusters, and away from the multiplexes there are more than a few filmmakers willing to push the boat out and brave new cinematic territory. Sometimes they push technology to new limits, redefining the way in which audiences perceive the use of 3D; other times they shatter filmmaking tropes and deliver a film which upends conventions in a fresh and invigorating way. For those cynics out there who think contemporary cinema no longer has any new and original ideas to offer, here are 15 groundbreaking movies produced since 2010 which you have to see.
