15 Most Hated Comic Book Movie Characters Ever

The red-headed stepchildren of the comic book movie universe.

It wasn’t too long ago in the annals of cinema history that comic book movies were relatively few and far between, with standout character development and performances limited to the likes of Christopher Reeve’s Superman and Michael Keaton’s Batman. Nowadays, with the glut of comic book movies released each year and the quality of characters and actors within them ever increasing most comic book fans must be in geek heaven.

But not all comic book characters make a smooth transition from page to silver screen – either in days gone by or more recently – and for every brilliant character like Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark there’s also a disappointingly misinterpreted Mary Jane Watson or Juggernaut.

Be they ludicrously adapted superheroes or sidekicks, annoying love interests or bad guys that are about as villainous as a Labrador puppy, the forthcoming comic book movie characters all have one thing in common: We don’t like them.

15. Venom – Spider-Man 3

Of all the many foes and villains Spider-Man has faced in his fifty some years of existence, Venom is perhaps one of the best known. Naturally, there was a lot weighing on his first ever appearance on the big screen so imagine the disappointment when the loathsome third instalment of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy was where he turned up.

Played by Topher Grace and apparently shoehorned into the movie at the insistence of producers despite there being plenty of foes already present in the film, the villain felt rushed and came across as more of an obnoxious tw*t than anything resembling a worthy and villainous adversary of Spidey.

Given a better film and better development, Venom may have fared a lot better but in Spider-Man 3 it really was a case of too many villains spoil the broth. Though with a standalone Venom film already in the pipeline and set for release next year, there’s time yet for the villain to be done right yet. Fingers crossed.
