17 Superhero Movies That Were Nominated For Oscars

Who has the most Oscars - DC or Marvel?

Groot Guardians Of The Galaxy

With great budgets comes great expectations and while there’s no shortage of superhero heroes that failed to meet them, it’s reassuring to know that for every disappointment there’s a movie hip enough to receive an Oscar nomination or two.

Superhero detractors contend that the Oscars don’t tell you very much about the quality of a film (especially if the nominations are for technical achievements), but hear this: of the Burton/Schumacher Batman films, the only picture that didn’t receive an Oscar nomination was Batman & Robin. Instead, it received eleven Razzie nominations from which it won one – Worst Supporting Actress for Alicia Silverstone.

Enough said, really.

The purpose of this article is to address the fanboy element who wants to know if DC has more nominations than Marvel, if the MCU has ever won an Oscar and if Suicide Squad’s golden statuette puts it head and shoulders above every other superhero movie.

There are probably more burning topics of conversation in this troubled cosmos but for now they’ll just have to wait.

17. X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Groot Guardians Of The Galaxy
Fox

Nominated For: Best Achievement In Visual Effects.

It's not the best movie movie in the X-Men universe, but Days Of Future Past was the first (and so far only) X-Men picture to receive an Oscar nomination. Given the generally high standard of the series to date, that's either long overdue recognition or an incredible insult, take your pick.

Your average X-Men movie is usually more spirited and imaginative (not to mention shorter) than typical superhero fare and Days Of Future Past is no exception, the plot packing in everything from time travel to a pre-Watergate Richard Nixon. If Suicide Squad can swipe a golden statuette then this franchise deserves a half-dozen, if only for being able to pull off having Nixon and Wolverine in the same film film.

Will Logan end the series Oscar drought in 2018? Start campaigning now and there's a chance.
