20. Nicolas Cage - Big Daddy (Kick-Ass)

Though Nicolas Cage narrowly missed out on playing Superman in Tim Burton's aborted Superman Lives, he did get to play a few superheroes in the years that followed, best of all Damon Macready aka Big Daddy in Kick-Ass.

Big Daddy is an hilariously unsubtle parody of Adam West-era Batman, and Cage delivers a wonderfully over-the-top tribute to West's signature idiosyncratic delivery throughout.

This alone would be enough to make it a superhero performance for the ages, honestly, but it's the weirdly touching bond with his daughter, Mindy aka Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), that truly takes Cage's work to the next level.

Best Moment: That incredible warehouse montage where Big Daddy slaughters a fleet of mobster Frank D'Amico's (Mark Strong) henchmen. Gnarly.
