20 Gross Movie Make-Up Effects That Make Us Ill

It really is phenomenal what liquid latex, cotton balls, and fake blood can achieve. We have all scooped up various bottles and face paint wheels whenever Halloween comes to town in an attempt to make the most disgusting, chilling, and cool-looking sores and open wounds for our friends to check out. I, myself, have dabbled in the art of special effects make-up and have found it to be almost soothing. Creating a project takes time, planning, and above all, patience. For some movie fans, one of our favorite parts is the special effects. For some reason, we love tearing them to pieces if they don€™t look right or believable, which is all fine and good, until we see something on the screen that makes us want to cry. We get instant goosebumps, we might even start to sweat a little bit, our stomachs churn, and pretty soon it feels like we€™ve got the stomach bug. All because of a little thing we like to call our imagination. The role of a special effects movie make-up artist isn€™t only what goes onto the faces and bodies of their actors, but also the various props and disembodies limbs that may show up on set. What makes movie make-ups so powerful is their ability to suspend our disbelief. We know they are actors and we know the carnage isn€™t real yet we have a very physical and emotional reaction to certain visuals. We react because it looks painful or because we€™ve had a similar wound or because we can only hope we never have to experience that kind of trauma. I have selected twenty such make-ups that make us feel sick to our stomachs and compiled them in the following pages. Please be warned, reader. It took me a long time to get this list together because it was actually starting to make me feel ill, just looking up videos on YouTube and what have you. I had to take breaks, hold off on making dinner, and get lots of fresh air - all steps I hope you take in your journey through this article. Now, onto the carnage!

I am a college graduate of Penn State with two bachelors in the arts. When I'm not writing or performing, I am an SFX make-up artist for local up and coming films in the Houston area. I love horror movies, James Spader, and will watch anything suggested to me.
