20. The Shining - The Eternal Soak
When a gorgeous woman turns into an ugly woman, we are not so often put off our meals. When that ugly woman, though, is covered in what can only be described as mold and bed sores, it is hard to stomach even the smallest handful of popcorn. One of the best things about movie make-up is its ability to let audiences imagine and include other variables of the effect - such as texture and even smell. When we first saw the old lady in the mirrors reflection, her skin sagging and peeling off, we were instantly reminded of that block of cheese sitting in the back of our refrigerator, which is enough to make anyone sick to their stomachs
19. Pet Semetary - Don't Turn Your Back On Me
Everyone remembers the shocking scene in the screen adaptation of Stephen Kings novel Pet Semetary where we are introduced to the effect spinal meningitis can have on the human body. Rachels sister, Zelda, is lying, crumpled and abandoned, on her barren bed in the room furthest from the family, banished to carry on living in solitary confinement. It is the protrusion of her bones, counting every rib and seeing her spine through her back that made us feel absolutely sick. We feel sick because we feel terrible for her, the pain shes presumably going through physically and emotionally, but what we feel even worse about is her choking to death while being fed gruel by her young, beautiful sister. Her fish-like lips curling over the spoon, her head seemingly twisting a 180 degree turn to look over her shoulder as her sister leaves her to die. It puts me off my dinner every time.
