I recently read a list ranking the 12 Star Trek films from worst to best. To my surprise Insurrection was placed bottom. Surely 5 is the worst one?! Seriously, like have you ever watched 5? For me there are three categories of Trek film, 'good', 'bad' and 'ok'. Insurrection falls into the 'ok' category (along with 3, 7, 10). Following on from First Contact was always going to be tough, but it all had all the right ingredients. Jonathan Frakes returned to direct, Jerry Goldsmith returned for the music, it was the first film to be fully CGI for the ship scenes too. It could of been great. Insurrection is not a brilliant film. But it's not the worst Trek film. I decided to put my case across the only sensible way, anonymously though the internet. Please comment away, good or bad comments appreciated, this is my first article.
5. It's Star Trekking...
Talk to any fans of the original Trek continuity about the reboots and there is a good chance they will mention a lack of exploration. Two films have come and gone now, and though excellent in their own way they have stayed very close to home, with immediate problems (bad guys) needing to be solved. Star Trek started off as a show about strange new worlds and I have always thought it is at its best when sticking close to this. TOS, TNG, VOY and even ENT had this as their main motivation, and it allows for almost a new planet/species almost every episode. It gives the writers freedom to come up with pretty much whatever they want. Planets where time passes faster, entire underwater planets, aliens that collectively dream.... It's all fair game. Insurrection at the very least shows us a new planet, with new aliens. The fountain of youth...in space! angle may not be the most original but it's does its job just about, of giving us a motivation for why the Son'a want the planet.
