4. The Next Gen Crew & Timeline
Perhaps this is a personal choice but as child of the eighties, TNG and Voyager were always more my thing than TOS. The Next Gen crew only got 4 movies but benefited from having a full 7 series of television. As a result this is a crew that sits together pretty well. With some flimsy pretext we can squeeze Worf back in, (just like First Contact) and we are good to go. Part of the problems Nemesis suffered from a few years later was the Picard-Data heavy story. (Not surprising when you look at writing credits). Here everyone got a little bit of attention. It still might be mostly about Picard and Data but they at least tried to share it out a bit. Worf had his puberty, Riker had his joystick moment, Deanna had some comedy moments, and perhaps the nicest touch was giving La Forge his eyes back.
Crusher didn't get much screen time as always, but she had a few things to do on the planet at least. Not all of this worked, I'm not saying it did, which is why this film is stuck in mediocrity. It also includes one of only two swear words that I know of ever uttered in the entirety of Star Trek. As well as this we are given a few glimpses of life in the next gen universe. The Borg are mentioned, the Cardassians are mentioned. We see the turbolift display showing the lift moving sideways as well as up, we see the holoship and its de-cloaking. The Khitomer Accords are mentioned, subspace weapons, the warp core ejection. It may not be much but it's a few glimpses into the Trek universe. After Voyager and DS9 ended there has been nothing official to carry on the canon, so a few mentions are better than nothing.
