6 Doctor Who Movies That Almost Happened

5. Tom Baker's Scratchman

TARDIS Doctor Who
BBC/Brian Williamson

This is the first known attempt at a canon movie and it occurred, unsurprisingly, at the height of the show's popularity. Surprisingly though, it was neither the producers nor the BBC who spearheaded the idea, but the iconic Tom Baker himself.

During the show's twelve season in the mid-70s, Baker and his then-companion, Ian Marter, crafted an ambitious but rather chaotic script for an elaborate feature film named "Doctor Who meets Scratchman".

It was to feature the Doctor, Harry, Sarah Jane, as well as Daleks, aquatic Cybermen, Satan, a giant pinball table and sentient scarecrows (Family of Blood eat your heart out). Casting-wise, Vincent Price was touted as the Devil and model icon Twiggy was designed to replace Elizabeth Sladen as the Doctor's companion.

It seems Baker threw in everything but the kitchen sink, and the movie likely would have needed scaling back for budgetary reasons. Nothing ever became of it, but Baker quietly held out hope for the rest of his tenure, while fans to this day have expressed desire to see the story take form as an audio drama or graphic novel.
