6 Movie Bromances That Should've Been Romances

4. Fight Club (1999): "Everyman" and Tyler Durden

This relationship would work for many different reasons and I think, had it been written or made today this idea could have at the very least been explored, especially considering this is a Fincher film and he is an expert hand and has no problems with presenting truly fascinating bisexual characters on screen (as in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). Bisexual is definitely the way I would go with the two central characters in this film... the protagonist played by Edward Norton (who is unnamed) and Brad Pitt's Tyler Durden... who, SPOILER ALERT are actually the same person. The reason this would work is for one main reason that would link to the overall sexual themes of the film and also would help the audience work out the plot twist, and that is masturbation. If, for example, up until meeting Norton had Durden been heterosexual, but became strangely attracted to Durden (he is certainly infatuated with the idea of him in the film) this could suggest something was a little strange about his character. Added to this the fact that when Norton and Pitt fight in Fight Club, Norton is in reality just punching himself... how about the realization that when Norton and Pitt have sex in the film, in reality Norton is just masturbating. It's an interesting if slightly weird addition which could add a whole new level to a film which already has so many, but this would definitely work, and wouldn't actually be all that odd in a film so full of oddities from the very beginning. Something to think about at the very least.
