7 Films Which Eerily Predicted The Future

6. The Lone Gunmen - Flying A Plane Into The Towers

Continuing with the attack on the World Trade Centre towers, numerous films and shows have depicted something similar occurring or have featured events which have sent conspiracy theorists into a frenzy. For example, in 1997 The Simpsons showed a shot of a magazine with the number nine positioned right next to the towers, obviously creating a 9/11. In The Matrix, pause on the shot of Neo's passport and you'll notice it expires on September 11th 2001, and didn't he work in one of the Trade Centres? It's no coincidence, it's all down to the illuminate, if you ask the internet forums. Oh, those darned world rulers. Has to be them, or the government, right? Not just a random date picked out from the top of a production assistant's head? We'll never know, but never the less, it is all a bit farfetched. However, there is one incident which is difficult to brush off. It may not be a film, but it's certainly worth mentioning. In early 2001 The Lone Gunmen, side characters on Fox's The X-Files (another show which showed the destruction of twin towers in its 1997 film adaptation) received their own spin off show, co-helmed by Breaking Bad's Vince Gillian. For those unfamiliar, the Lone Gunmen were three paranoid conspiracy theorists, devoting their lives to uncovering the US government's dirty secrets. More often than not they were the comic relief for The X-Files and thus their show combined drama and espionage with a bit of fluff from the nerdy trio. But things got very serious in the pilot episode, which aired March the fourth, 2001. In the episode a government faction posing as terrorists hijack an airplane and plan to fly it into the Trade Centre towers. About as specific as you can get. But in addition to that, the plot called for the event to an excuse by the US government to start an international war on terror. Not unlike the conspiracy theories surrounding the actual attack.
In the show, the disaster is averted thanks in part to our three heroes and the episode aired just six months before the tragedy on 9/11. When the series crossed the pond and was shown on the UK's version of the Sci-Fi channel in 2002, the episode was cut, for obvious reasons. The fact that the show deals with government conspiracies and cover ups just adds more gas to the fire. Series' actor Dean Haglund even revealed that The X-Files and The Lone Gunmen were often approached by representatives from organisations such as the FBI and CIA with plot ideas. Of course, Haglund is a well known conspiracy theorist himself, so it's probably best to take whatever he says with a pinch of salt. But there's no denying that this is an eerie coincidence. Or 9/11 actually planned by the US government and The Lone Gunmen just a warning? Who knows? The Truth is Out There (sorry). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rkrBCIBpdk
