7 Reasons Why The Man Of Steel Trailer Is Actually Better Than The Movie

7. The Trailer Structure Is Better Realised

One of the reasons I found Man of Steel to be so disappointing was because I couldn't find a way into the story - with the narrative spread out amongst flashbacks that felt either randomly placed or shoe-horned in when it seemed most convenient for the director to throw in a plot point, I couldn't - for lack of a better term - "get into" the movie. With most films, it's sad that you decide whether you're enjoying them within the first 10 minutes: Man of Steel lacks a hook, or a point at which you're able to climb on board. The trailer doesn't suffer from that problem because, hey, it's a trailer. But it's also structured to better effect, with a better-realised beginning, middle and end that would have improved the actual movie greatly. We hear Clark as a child first ("The world's too big, Mom"), and we follow him through a series of sequences as he becomes an adult, and finally Superman. Had Snyder's movie opted for something along those lines, free from the constraints of those flashbacks, I think that the movie would have ultimately been easy to go along with. We needed to go on the journey with Clark, in order to feel his pain. The trailer makes far better light of that notion.
