8 Greatest Ever Film Moments Featuring Pancakes
1. Uncle Buck
The late, great John Candy was behind a number of great comic characters, most of whom traded off his easy charm and his disarming wit, and Uncle Buck is probably the pick of the bunch.
Thrust into a domestic situation he has neither the inclination nor the experience to master, Buck's unsuitability factor is chiefly highlighted by his inability to serve anything approaching nourishing food to his young charges. This is the ultimate sign of unworthiness in this universe - and follows a long tradition of good domesticity reflecting worthiness to some cause in films (consider Mrs Doubtfire, for instance).
But instead of crumbling after his disastrous first attempt, Buck takes the bull by the horns, turns things around and proves how worthy he is of looking after the kids by mastering a number of tasks defined entirely by how the children see parents. He rescues the eldest, toughest child from a predatory boyfriend (threatening violence as an added display), saves her young sister from a controlling, malignant teacher, and then marvels the two youngest kids, including a wide-eyed McCauley Culkin, with a giant stack of breakfast pancakes.
With this grandest display of domesticity, Buck is assured of his status as conqueror and worthy protector...
