8 Signs Fantastic Four Was Always Guaranteed To Suck

What led to Fantastic Four becoming a not so fantastic flop?

Josh Trank's Fantastic Four was supposed to be a fresh start for the franchise. While the 2005 and 2007 movies captured some of the spirit of Marvel's First Family, they were still terrible, so this reboot was conceived with the goal to establish the team as a group moviegoers could take seriously. The prospect of a "dark" and "gritty" version of the characters who kicked off the Marvel Universe back in 1961 was a turn off for some fans, but with the Ultimate Comics seemingly serving as his main inspiration, it appeared as if Trank was heading in the right direction with his contemporary retelling of their origin story. With Fox apparently gearing up to have the Fantastic Four meet the X-Men in a crossover movie a few years from now, they too clearly had high hopes for this reboot. Things didn't go as planned though, and Fantastic Four has the dubious honour of being not only the studio's first major comic book movie flop, but also the biggest failure in the genre since 2011's Green Lantern (and even that fared better with critics). Of course, Fantastic Four was always one of those movies that a very large portion of fans have been hoping would fail. Much of that stems from a desire to see Marvel Studios get their hands on the characters. This is something that has been happening a lot in recent years, but while the likes of Daredevil and Spider-Man may have come home, the Fantastic Four and X-Men still elude them. Based on the dismal box office debut of the movie however, Kevin Feige might just be able to add this iconic foursome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe sooner rather than later. With more and more shocking revelations emerging this week about the way Trank conducted himself on set, it's become clear that Fantastic Four was always destined to be failure. From the insane sounding drama behind the scenes that saw the reboot's director clash with the studio to the shocking amount of reshoots they forced on the movie just months before release, there's no doubting the fact that Fantastic Four was always going to suck...
