Phantasm is a beloved cult series that never broke through to the mainstream, but even casual horror fans will be aware of the Tall Man and his silver spheres of death. They certainly made an impression on Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary, who decided writing a script for a potential fourth instalment was the best career move following his Oscar win.

He penned a script called Phantasm 1999 AD, an epic adventure set in a world where the Tall Man had destroyed most of America. The plot featured badass ice cream man Reggie setting out into the wasteland to rescue his friend Mike, and destroy the Tall Man once and for all. There was also a juicy supporting role for Bruce Campbell as a mercenary who meets Reggie along the way.

The script was action packed and pricey, meaning series creator Don Coscarelli couldn’t raise finances for it. He cobbled together another sequel called Phantasm: Oblivion to try to raise interest, but this budget-starved entry did little to build excitement, so Phantasm 1999 AD was eventually scrapped.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
