Although Spider-Man 3 was the low point of the original trilogy, it was actually the highest grossing movie of the Tobey Maguire era, and that was good enough for Sony Pictures to greenlight a fourth instalment.

Sam Raimi was set to return as director, with Maguire and Kirsten Dunst reprising their roles as Peter Parker and MJ respectively. Concept art from Spider-Man 4 surfaced online in 2016, outing the movie's villains and a handful of planned scenes.

The Vulture would have been the primary antagonist, and John Malkovich was rumoured to have entered talks to play him. This concept sketch shows him squaring off against Spidey, who is perched on a gargoyle statue.

Spider-Man 4's Vulture looks like he would have been more comics-accurate than the Michael Keaton version who appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but that doesn't necessarily mean he would have been superior. Keaton excelled in the role, delivering a modern, relatable version of Adrian Toomes.

Other sketches from the ill-fated movie confirm B-list villains the Shocker, the Prowler and Rhino would also have appeared, though the extent of their roles is unknown.
