We are now merely days away from The Dark Knight Rises opening in cinemas worldwide and if you’re anything like me you’re filled with a sort of giddy apprehension.
Although stopping short of the recent Avengers movie, The Dark Knight still made its financiers an absolute Batload with a worldwide return of over $1 billion and if the TDKR is even half as good as its trailers seem to indicate, they’re about to make a whole lot more.
But after we arrive home from the theatre, after we’ve slept on the plot, the story, after the dust has settled, that’s when it’ll properly hit us: this is it, the end. Nolan’s Batman is no more.
Don’t worry! If the Batman franchise can survive Joel Schumacher, it can survive Nolan’s departure. If it can survive Joel Schumacher, it can survive anything.
With his gritty, realistic and acclaimed take on the iconic Dark Knight, Nolan really set the bar in terms of quality. Let’s see someone try to put nipples on the Batsuit now!
That said there are plenty of filmmakers out there who we feel could step up to fill the void; we thought the time was right to post our picks for the ten directors we feel are most up to the task.
Because the mission is never over.

Aside from Ben Affleck, which I think is the one interesting and thought provoking choice on this list, I wouldn’t want any of those directors touching any further Batman re-boots…
How about one of the following? I doubt they’ll offer it to an ‘old hand’.
Neil Blomkamp
Duncan Jones
Gareth Edwards
Joe Cornish
Gareth Evans
James Watkins
Rupert Sanders
Steve McQueen
Neveldine/Taylor
Just off the top of my head?
@Brad Williams : you have written an amazing piece of analysis. Kudos !
Have been a great admirer of his films. He is one of my favorite. How many are there who have actually seen Nolan’s film just once ???
I’m amazed by what he has done with the Batman franchise and sad that it’s coming to an end. Can’t wait more to see Nolan’s future work.
Would like the see what Paul Thomas Anderson could do. One, if not the best relatively young director, great at getting great performances from his cast be it small or an ensemble. There Will Be Blood showed he could do epic. Not known for action/comic book but neither was Nolan.
Joss DIDN’T direct “Cabin In The Woods” co-writer Drew Goddard did.
Umm… What about Peter Jackson?
I really like the thought of David Fincher helming the next Bat movie(s) but also like the idea of Duncan Jones, Ben Affleck, Nicholas Winding Refn, and Steve McQueen.
