18. Independence Day
Director Roland Emmerich's alien invasion blockbuster was second only to Jurassic Park in the 1990s blockbuster box office stakes, earning $817 million and proving a huge popular success. As such, it's somewhat hard to believe that Fox didn't insist on turning it into a series right away.
Alas, the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence didn't land until 2016. In the twenty year interim, Emmerich had revisited epic disaster territory more than once - Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 - and perhaps unsurprisingly, the routine had gotten a wee bit stale.
Hopes had initially been high that Resurgence might be the midway point in an Independence Day trilogy, but after largely negative reviews and comparatively paltry box office takings of $390 million, it seems unlikely this would be high on anyone's agenda, with or without the Disney/Fox deal.
