Avengers: Endgame - 10 Characters Most Likely To Die

For whom the bell tolls...

Thanos Captain America Skull

Death is coming to the MCU again. After the devastation of the Decimation at the end of Infinity War, you can probably barely bear to think about it, but it's very likely that we're going to be put through the wringer once again. Endgame is, after all, the end of a Saga and as a new dawn is promised, this is the perfect opportunity to retire some characters and clean up some loose ends.

And given Thanos' delight at the idea of courting death way back in his first appearance at the end of The Avengers, there's no way this story ends without the grim reaper's scythe cutting through the air a few more times.

The genius of this whole situation is that almost every character who could be up for the chop also has a fairly compelling reason to be kept alive. Whether that's their family, their unresolved story-lines or the fact that they SHOULD be appearing in future sequels. In other words, for once, there aren't too many obviously dead meat characters. That's what makes it so scary.

So who goes, how and what might be their saving grace?

10. Thor

Avengers Infinity War Thor
Marvel Studios

As one of the original Avengers, Thor is definitely in the firing line. He's had his three solo movies, he's realised his worthiness and become the leader of his people and his people are now separated from him and under the watch of Valkyrie. In other words, he's probably not needed beyond Endgame all that much, no matter how much everyone now wants a fourth movie.

How He Could Die

Thor's arc has been defined by sacrifice ever since his moment of revelation in New Mexico of selflessness and Infinity War saw some hint of regret in Thor at having been born of violence. It would make a lot of sense for Thor to lay down his life in order to save Asgard and to give his people a future. If there's a potential trade, the newly more mature hero would take it.

What Might Save Him?

Partly business and partly narrative. In terms of the latter, Thor has the story of Asgard's resettlement to complete and that deserves its own movie (even if that doesn't necessarily guarantee anything at all). And for Marvel Studios, the financial success of Thor: Ragnarok suggests there's more money to be made with this brand, so they may be reluctant to kill him off.
