Avengers: Endgame - Katherine Langford's Secret Role Revealed

So... why was it cut?

13 Reasons Why Katherine Langford

In the build up to the release of Avengers: Endgame, 13 Reasons Why's Katherine Langford was cast in an undisclosed role. Fans had speculated that she could've played Kate Bishop - the new Hawkeye set to join Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton on Disney+ - or even a young Black Widow. By the time the fourth Avengers film premiered, however, Langford was nowhere to be seen.

In the wake of the film's release, some outlets even posited that Langford's casting - never officially confirmed by Marvel - just wasn't true. The prevailing theory, and the one we now know to be true, was that her role was cut. Information regarding her exact role in the story, though, continued to prove elusive.

SPOILERS FOR ENDGAME'S ENDING AHEAD!

Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via IGN), the Russo Brothers revealed that Langford was originally meant to play an older version of Morgan Stark, the daughter of Tony and Pepper Potts, in the moments just after Iron Man snapped his fingers.

"There was an idea that we had that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way station... where Thanos saw his daughter when he snapped his fingers... There was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station. We showed it to a test audience, and it was really confusing."

The idea was clearly meant to riff on Thanos' vision of Gamora during Infinity War's climax, but with Endgame still having so much to wrap up following Stark's death, Langford's cameo seemingly contributed little.

"What we realized about it was we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter... It wasn’t resonating with us on an emotional level, which is why we moved away with it. The intention was that his future daughter forgave him, and gave him peace to go. And the idea felt resonant, but there were just too many ideas in an overly complicated movie."

Of course, with Langford's cut role now revealed, that means that Disney still have to cast Bishop for the upcoming Hawkeye series. Langford could still potentially play the part, but it's likely that the House of Mouse will look elsewhere to fill that role going forward.
