Blockers Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

If Game Night and the latest comedy from Pitch Perfect writer Kay Cannon are anything to go by, 2018 just might be a banner year for studio comedy.

Blockers, starring John Cena, Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz as three parents attempting to, ahem, "c***-block" their daughters from going through with a sex pact on prom night, is sure to be one of the year's most pleasant surprises.

The trailers haven't done a great job of selling the movie as anything more than a gender-swapped version of a typical teen sex comedy, but reviews out of SXSW have been unexpectedly positive, and with the film now starting to screen around the world, it's clearly with good reason.

If you're an American Pie fan, there's a lot here to enjoy, and even if you're not, Blockers is a unique enough update to the formula that you just might dig it regardless.

Those especially averse to gross-out gags will probably want to steer clear, but for the most part this is a shockingly smart, hilarious and heartfelt comedy driven by a fantastic ensemble cast...
