2. The Gay Subplot Feels Underdeveloped

Blockers Gideon Adlon
Universal

In order to diversify an already forward-thinking movie, one of the three young ladies at the centre of the film's prom night sex pact - Sam (Gideon Adlon), daughter of Hunter (Ike Barinholtz) - is revealed to be gay early on, and much of her arc follows her struggle to come out and embrace her true feelings.

It's a nice enough idea, and Adlon certainly gives it her all, but compared to the movie's other romantic set-ups, her pining for cape-wearing geek Angelica (Ramona Young) feels under-developed and ultimately quite rushed.

Whether it's symptomatic of a script that's written by two men or not, the representation feels disappointingly tacked-on rather than the nuanced and refreshing as it so easily could have.
