With the recent conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel scheduled for June 2013, it’s time for us to start thinking about what DC character Warner Bros will bring to the big screen next as they build to the inevitable Justice League movie. Since Batman will likely be rebooted sooner rather than later and Superman returns next year, the obvious first choice is the third member of DC’s holy trinity of heroes: Wonder Woman.
Why?
Excluding the aforementioned Dark Knight and Man of Steel, Wonder Woman is the most recognisable character, and definitely the most iconic female, in the DC universe. She stands as a strong and powerful icon for women in an industry that is even more male dominated than most. There have been eight Batman and six Superman live-action movies (including the announced upcoming releases) but Wonder Woman has never appeared on the big screen.
Despite existing for over seventy years, the Princess of Themyscira has only ever starred in animated movies. The closest we’ve come to a feature film was a television movie back in 1976 and in which Cathy Lee Crosby played a blonde spy called Diana Prince, reminiscent of the powerless “I Ching era” comics. Fortunately, Lynda Carter’s 1976-1979 series was far truer to the Wonder Woman comics readers had grown to know and love.
However, after taking it up for the second and third season, along with rebranding it as The New Adventures of Wonder Woman, CBS decided to pursue their sitcom schedule more heavily and cancelled the show. Since then, Wonder Woman has never appeared in a live-action format, except for a now infamous ill-fated pilot thirty two years later. After being turned down by every major US television network, the modern day Los Angeles-based take on the character a pilot episode was finally ordered by NBC. Adrianne Palicki was announced as the star of the show in February 2011 and by May, NBC had announced that they would not be picking up the series.

Adrianne Palicki as Wonder Woman
I think we can all agree that it’s about time someone did justice to one of the most iconic women in the history of pop culture.

Adrienne Palicki seems like a very beautiful, and nice girl, but I’m glad she never became Wonder Woman. It has to be someone who looks more like Lynda Carter.
I just hope that we are still alive when a Wonder Woman movie comes out in the silver screen. Because DC/WB never gave WW a respect or a chance to have her own debut in a movie or in her own animated series, It will be forever be SUPERMAN BATMAN SUPERMAN BATMAN because thats the only thing that they are good at. Unlike MARVEL
I dont agree on the casting choices these women are not as beautiful as Lynda Carter. Gina look perfect to become Artemis than Diana.
WB/DC are sexist., They would never take risks for a female lead superhero but they are willing to give male lead superheroes a second chance look at Batman and Robin it failed at the boxoffice but now we have batman dark knight. Look at superman returns it was a big disapointment but now we have superman man of steel, The green lantern movie was a box office bomb but they would still reconsider a reboot.
WB/DC ARE SEXIST!!! they would never give WW her own chance to shine in the animated and movie world she would always be a supporting character forever
Wonder woman does have her own animated movie.
yes there was an animated movie but they wont give her a sequel anymore WTF!! check the sales it really did well
but like i said superman batman forever and ever
I think you are being a bit overly harsh on DC/WB Daria. Hathaway and Pfeiffer have both played fantastic strong women for DC.
I think the whole of society is to blame for the lack of a good superhero film with a female lead. There have been a number of horrible attempts in Catwoman, Barb Wire, Aeon Flux and Electra. These were bound to fail due to poor scripting and lack of support from the studios.
I would love to see Wonder Woman on the big screen, but only if done well with good actors, a good script and support from the studio. Same with Ms Marvel. Even with all the MCU films, there hasn’t been a female lead.
Definitely Wonder Woman! She’s more recognizable than Oprah! LOL
And I hope they cast a WOMAN and not a little girl with a squeaky voice!
JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT IS THE PERFECT PERSON TO PLAY WONDER WOMAN. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT…
Jake,
Have you ever looked at Wonder Woman? She has a strong, aquiline face. Jennifer Love Hewitt’s face is far too mousy. We need a strong woman. If she weren’t so old, I’d recommend Lucy Lawless. She has the perfect piercing blue eyes that Wonder Woman needs and also is proven to look good kicking ass in ancient Greece. I just don’t know that she is young enough to pull it off anymore.
Another suggestion to go with is more of a 40′s pin-up look as the original Wonder Woman looked like. Think of Buffy, she was not all cut and muscular, but she could still kick ass. Katy Perry (or Kat van D) have the highest level of pin-up charm I’ve seen in recent years. Kat would need too much makeup to cover the body art and I don’t know that Smurfette was enough of a role for me to judge Katy Perry’s acting ability on.
I just don’t know of any actress, aside from Lynda Carter, who I can look at and SEE Wonder Woman. And if Lucy Lawless may be too old, a woman 5 years younger than my mother certainly is, no matter how stunning she has remained.
Refn’s whole “fetish” with powerful women turns me off. There’s huge difference between seeing someone/thing as a fetish and respecting it. If Refn were to direct the movie with that mindset, he risks not depicting WW as a well rounded character.
Anyway, I never considered Lynn Collins as a Wonder Woman candidate, but now that you bring her up she seems to be a good fit.
Maybe casting for WWs major role is toughest than Batman and Superman. They made a lot of Batman and Superman movies because it was easier to find good actors. I guess that they are telling us message that WW is quite powerful and that they are very careful to choose a right actress to be a WW. I really hope they can get it done as soon as possible! WW rules! :)
They just need to make television series on each of these Justice League characters so the audience can become comfortable with each of their storylines instead of trying to cram it all into one or two movies. Plus it will give way more time to explore all the villains. Then make the Justice League movie to the big screen. Make one for Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter, and maybe have Batman/Superman crossover a couple times before the actual movie. Kinda like how they did in the cartoon series. Also, they can add more less known JLA members in the movie like Hawkgirl and so on. They should have the Legion of Doom as the main antagonists and pit each superhero against their worst villains at once.
I think that either Jaimie Alexander from Thor or Bridget Regan from Legend of the Seeker would be a great fit for the part.
Megan fox is the obvious choice for the next wonder woman… Hands down… No need to look any further….
