Defying all expectations of what a 35-years-later sequel to Ridley Scott's masterful sci-fi noir classic could be, Blade Runner 2049 is a summation of everything that's brought Villeneuve this far in his career, a staggering, literally jaw-dropping blockbuster spectacle.

Villeneuve's patient direction may result in a slightly overbaked runtime, but it's hard to much care given the film's visual rewards in almost every frame (thanks again, Roger Deakins), not to mention the stunning ensemble cast and a terrific musical score from Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch.

Certain aspects of the plot are tailor-made to divide fans, but given the insane challenge and pressure involved in getting this sequel made, it's undeniable that Villeneuve rose to the occasion and delivered a film every bit as awe-inspiring and provocative as its legendary predecessor.
