3. Sicario (2015)

Another bold step up for Villeneuve, and the film that cemented his status as one of Hollywood's hottest directors, Sicario is an electrifying film in practically every way that one can be.

From Villeneuve's deliberate direction to the eye-wateringly good cinematography (yes, from Roger Deakins), a fantastic Jóhann Jóhannsson score and excellent performances from Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro, Sicario is a home run of a crime thriller.

Unafraid to lean into the grimmer aspects of its tale but also accompanied with lashings of dark humour thanks to the great Taylor Sheridan's tonally-balanced script, this is one of the most taut and memorable thrillers of the last few years.
