Doctor Strange was first announced way back in 2005, one of the first planned pictures from the newly-minted Marvel Studios (along with Captain America). Things ultimately went a little differently, with Iron Man leading the Avengers forward instead and the MCU actively steering clear of overt magic for its first dozen movies, but now, eleven years later, Stephen Strange is finally getting to grace the big screen.

Benedict Cumberbatch will don the collar as the Sorcerer Supreme and, based on what we've seen in the newly released teaser trailer, it's going to be a pretty faithful adaptation - this isn't just Sherlock with magical powers. Naturally, with a mix of the Marvel name and the involvement of Cumberbatch the film has already shot up fans' anticipation lists, and everyone is now desperate to know more about the MCU take on the hero.

Of course, being planned for so long means Marvel have had ample opportunity to seed Stephen Strange using their patented blend of foreshadowing easter eggs and comic book references over the past few years. Our world may have just been introduced to the character, but he's already been a part of the screen universe for years now, if you were looking the right places.
